Trevor Paglen’s Orbital Reflector is a satellite launch for purely artistic purposes, delivering a reflective object that we’ll all see orbiting above us, like a comet streaking across the night sky.
This video is not as personally inspiring as I’d hoped it would be, but still pretty insightful:
I do love that the project website has a statement about the project as an educational inspiration.
It is not enough to launch a rocket into space; we must also think critically about why we wish to do so and consider the implications and symbolism of our actions. Many people value science, technology, engineering, and mathematics as foundational disciplines that help power the future. But creative and innovative societies demand more than this.
They even intend to post lesson plans for STEAM education initiatives based around the project.
There’s an Orbital Reflector Kickstarter if you want to contribute to the project’s efforts.
